While in New York, I decided to explore the best places suggested for a healthy lunch. So my hunt for any kind of super-power-buddha-protein bowl started. Except for this, I also wanted to check the ingredients I hadn’t had the opportunity to buy or try yet.. Or I guess, I just wanted to be inspired for the „bowls“ creations for when I come back home? Because what other city can give you more inspiration than New York?
The United States don’t necessarily mean burger and coke, right? Here we go, here are my top 5 healthy bowls!
I loved the interior so much. Blue retro leather sofas just like in an old time movie. And I also loved the choice of the bowls. We started with the flax crackers served alongside butternut squash hummus. We chose two bowls. “Quinoa bowl” with avocado, sweet potato, pickled carrots, cumin, and orange citronette. The second choice was “Sprouted rye berry bowl” with roasted butternut squash, beets, pumpkin seeds, sage vinaigrette, and tofu. And both were big. Very, very big. You can easily take half of the bowl home for a dinner :)
Make sure to check their grocery store around the corner – I bought there some of the healthy stuff: Reishi Mushrooms powder, Hangover Herbal tonic, and the Brain dust to boost your thinking. More about my “catches” in the end of this blog post.
JustToKnow: I was curious, who designed this place which really stood out from all the „hipster-look-alike” bistros. It ‘s a work of Steven Gambrel. Quoting from Loony: „Gambrel took inspiration from a source that’s somewhat obscure, though certainly in tune with his refined aesthetic: Viennese secessionist architecture. With its white-lacquered walls and glossy black accents, the 70-table restaurant takes on the vibe of a French Salon, with painted hardwood floors and vintage-inspired blue leather banquettes.“Clover: 10 Downing Street, New York 10014 / @clovernewyork
I headed to ABCV before my morning yoga workshop with Sara Ticha. The place was full – groups of friends and couples enjoying healthy breakfast bowls, enjoying a lazy morning, enjoying themselves.. I wanted to start the day right, but I really couldn’t have decided what to go for:) Great options, very nice servings as well as the food presentation. And the menu cards telling you about all the benefits of herbs and ingredients caught me. I decided to try the warm bowl of Kitchari, yogurt, mint, fermented carrot and turmeric (I have never tried Kitchari before, so the decision was easier:). But believe me – you will be desperate what to choose.
GoodToKnow: Kitchari is a traditional staple healing and cleansing food in Ayurveda. It is a combination of mung beans, rice and spices. Kitchari is excellent for detoxification and de-aging of the body cells.
I heard so much about this tiny cool place that I just had to head there across the entire city. I wanted to try something different. So I went for their Power Bowl: Black Beans, Kale, Rice, Avocado, Pumpkin Seeds, Alfa Alfa Sprouts and spicy salsa verde. Great choice! And.. Check their toilets before you leave:)
4. DE MARIA
This fashionable all-day café suddenly closed in August 2018. What a pity! Anyway, I’m posting here the photo of the bowls and the ingredients, just for inspiration – as this was definitely a Bowl place to try. Hope they’ll ever open another spot! Tiger Bowl: Coconut grains, house-cured salmon, avocado, mango, pickled cucumbers, seaweed. Monkey Bowl: Turmeric poached egg, coconut grains, black chickpeas, carrots and turmeric white bean hummus.
GoodToKnow: Black chickpeas (Kala Chana) are loaded with nutrients such as vitamins, iron, protein, and copper. You can buy them dried and in comparison with the “regular” chickpeas they are black, smaller and wrinkly, but are packed with a stronger flavor.

Streetfood with the best view! And you can choose healthy bowls here, too. Go for a Ceviche Bowl made by young guys from Peru (and it tasted authentic just like in Peru). Poke Bowl was quite good, but if you could decide just for a one – rather go for the Ceviche Bowl!
GoodToKnow: Be sure to check the updates about the market venue and dates. As noted on their Facebook page recently: Indoor food market Saturdays + Sundays at Atlantic Terminal, 625 Atlantic Ave across from Barclays. (Through March). Friday Night Market with Vice at Villain, 307 Kent Ave, Williamsburg (through Dec 21st).
EXTRA TIPS.. OR BOWLS IN THE CUPS
This is not a place to sit with a bowl to eat. This is a place to sit with a coffee to sip. But what a coffee! Here in Chillhouse, they mix their own lattes with special power powders. We tried “Spin my wheels latte” with black Sesame Tahini, Honey and active ingredients such as Astragalus, Maca, Lion’s Mane, Shilajit, Gingko. Another choice went for a “Make me glow latte” with Ube, Ginger, Goji, Rehmannia, Acai, Mesquite. I also bought here another perfect thing: Binchotan Active Charcoal as a natural water cleaner. We use it at home and the water tastes so good.
JustToKnow: Binchotan, also known as White Charcoal, is a type of activated Charcoal that has been traditionally made for over 300 years in the Kishu province of Wakayama in Japan. Binchotan Charcoal can absorb impurities, that means to purify water and remove chemicals and heavy metals found in tap water.
2. SALTWATER COFFEE
You might know beetroot cappuccino, turmeric or charcoal latte.. but I came here to try the Ube latte! OK, alongside with a guilty pleasure in the form of Milk & Honey doughnut by Underwestdoughnuts :) By the way, the coffee was just perfect and this small Australian café has its own charm. Lazy morning should definitely start here!
GoodToKnow: Ube is a purple sweet potato originally from the Philippines. Love that color! Turmeric, an old Indian spice is called a sacred root. It contains a powerful compound called Curcumin with health benefits, special taste, and bright yellow color.
WHAT WAS MY FAVORITE CATCH?
I’m mentioning these 3 things in my tips. And I am really happy I bought them. Binchotan Charcoal by Morihata for water purifying. Brain Dust by Moonjuice as a natural boosting powder for your brain. It contains superherbs and supermushrooms which help combat the effects of stress and as they note – give you a “cosmic flow” (or in other words, it contains: Lion’s Mane Mushroom Extract, Maca Root Extract, Astragalus Root Extract, Rhodiola Root Extract, Ashwagandha Root and Leaf Extract, Ginkgo Leaf Extract, Stevia Leaf Extract). And I brought home a special herbal one: Hangover elixir by Wooden Spoon. It works!
